NRI Day (Non-Resident Indian) is celebrated on 9 January every year, and this day shows the contribution of the people who are working out of India and serving India as the overseas Indian community in the development of the country. 9 January 1915 was recognized as Non-Resident Indian Day, which is also called Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Because this date i.e 9th January was a very important date in Indian History as the Father of the Nation of India Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa and has given his unforgettable contribution towards India’s freedom. This day is celebrated every year as the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention.

Why is Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or NRI Day celebrated?:-

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or NRI Day is celebrated in honour of the Indian diaspora. Who, with their dedication and hard work, raised the flag of Indian culture abroad and raised the value of his country. The celebration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas / NRI Day was started from the year 2003. There is a historical reason behind celebrating this day on 9th January as it was when Mahatma Gandhi came back to India from South Africa.

This is the reason why this day is celebrated on 9th January. The suggestion to the government to celebrate Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was first given by Late Laxmi Mal. He believed that the Indian diaspora is just like Indian citizens in the progress of India and by giving them due respect, we can give a rapid impetus to the progress of India.

 

History of NRI Day / Pravasi Bharatiya Divas:-

The celebration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or NRI Day was started on 9 January 2003. Because on 9 January Mahatma Gandhi returned home from South Africa. In the 18th century, Gujarati merchant traders reached Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa. At the same time, Mahatma Gandhi arrived in the Natal province of South Africa in the year 1893 as a legal representative of a businessman Dada Abdullah Seth. Mahatma Gandhi fought against the apartheid policy in South Africa.

At the same time, he also fought for the respect of the overseas Indian community. Gandhiji succeeded in his mission through completely new and unknown methods of protest such as non-violence and satyagraha. Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa on 9 January 1915. Taking inspiration from the struggling journey of Mahatma Gandhi for 22 years, this day is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

The main purpose of NRI Day Celebration:-

This day (NRI Day) shows the contribution made by the overseas Indians in the development of India because they have not only brought laurels to India abroad through their works but have also made an important contribution in strengthening the Indian economy. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas would have been most special for them because people living outside the country illuminate the name of India even while living abroad. The main objective of this day is to recognize the contribution of overseas Indians in the development of India.

On this occasion, the Government of India usually organizes a three-day conference every year. This day is celebrated to inform the people of India about the achievements of non-resident brothers and to make the migrants aware of the expectations of the countrymen from them. These programs on Pravasi Bharatiya Divas add to the splendour of this festival even more. On this day, an important Indian expatriate is invited by the Government of India as the chief guest of this program, who has illuminated the name of India through his works.

After this, the achievements of the Indian diaspora are discussed as well as their problems and problems are also discussed and efforts are made to overcome them. During this time NRIs are encouraged to invest in India to enhance technology and industry. There are many schemes run by the Government of India for the expatriates investing in India so that they can easily establish business and industry in India.
