History of Hartalika Teej:-
According to a legend, the History of Hartalika Teej is belongs to Goddess Parvati, as she did austerities in her former birth, because she wanted Lord Shankar as her life partner. During this time, she did not consume food at all for many years, and she had taken only air during the austerity. Her father saw such a condition and he was very sad to see his daughter like this. Meanwhile, Maharishi Narada approached the Parvati’s father with a proposal of marriage on behalf of Lord Vishnu, which he accepted.
Mata Parvati became very sad when her father told her about the marriage proposal acceptance. Then one day at the request of one of her friends, Mata Parvati express her feeling towards Lord Shiva and this is the reason she is doing such harsh austerities to get Lord Shiva in her life as a husband, but on the other side her father had accepted marriage proposal sent by Lord Vishnu. Then her Saheli (her friend) advised Mata Parvati to go in the dense forest. Following the advice of Sakhi, Mother Parvati went to the cave and became absorbed in the worship of Lord Shiva.
It is said that Mata Parvati made a sand Shivling on the day of Bhadrapada Tritiya Shukla, and she did worship Lord shiva during the entire night to praise him. Lord Shiva pleased by her such dedication and hard penance and he accepted Mata Parvati as his wife.
Why it is called Hartalika Teej:-
Hartalika is made up of two words, Harit and Talika. Harit means Haran (kidnapped) and Talika means Sakhi means friend, and it falls on the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, due to which it is called Teej. This fast was called Haritalika because mother Parvati’s friend was taken her away from her father’s house to complete her fast and austerities.
