Govardhan Puja 2021 | Famous Hindu Festival

The Govardhan Puja is the biggest festival in Hinduism and it comes the next day of Diwali which has its own distinct and special significance. This festival is also known as the Annakoot festival. In Govardhan Puja, Godhan i.e. cow, bull, etc. is worshiped lawfully. After bathing and taking care of the animals, garlands are put on the head by applying oil and vermilion. Sweets are feed to cows after incense aarti. On this day Govardhan Mountain is also worshiped along with Shri Krishna. On this festival, the Govardhan form of Lord Krishna is worshipped and 56 Bhog and Annakoot are offered to him.

It was the incident when Shri Krishna asked his mother to worship Govardhan Mountain Instead of Lord Indra. On this, Brij residents started worshiping Govardhan Mountain, and Indra couldn’t digest this thing. Indra decided to torcher the Brajwasi on this act hence he did huge rain, and storm over them. To save the lives of the people of Brij because of the water everywhere, Shri Krishna lifted the Govardhan Mountain on his little finger with his divine power. People saved their lives by taking shelter under him. Since the day Govardhan Puja is celebrated every year.

Significance of Govardhan Puja:-

In Dwapar Yuga, Lord Narayan had incarnated as Shri Krishna to establish religion on earth. Born in Brij Bhumi, Shri Krishna was a cowherd and had a special attachment to nature. In that era, the people of Brij Bhumi considered Lord Indra as their presiding deity. But Shri Krishna believed that why worship Lord Indra, except the mountain which gives fruits, flowers, and other facilities to the people of Brij.

It is believed that at the behest of Lord Krishna, the people of Brij worshiped Govardhan Parvat instead of worshiping Devraj Indra, due to which Devraj Indra had made the entire Brij land water by incessant rain. Then Lord Shri Krishna lifted the Govardhan Mountain on the little finger of his hand to destroy the ego of Devraj Indra and protected the people of Brij from the rain. Since then, Govardhan Puja is performed every year with great pomp in every household.

 

Govardhan Puja Date in 2021:-

On the occasion of this festival, we have seen an official holiday in a few of the states in India. According to the Hindu Panchang, the Govardhan Puja date is falling on 05th November 2021.

 

What is Recognition of Govardhan Puja?:-

It is believed that when Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Mountain on his little finger for seven days to save the people of Braj from the torrential rain. The Gopies and all the Brajvasis had saved themselves by coming under the mountain. On the seventh day, the Lord placed the Govardhan Mountain down and ordered to celebrate the Annakoot festival by performing Govardhan Puja every year. Since then this festival started being celebrated in the name of Annakoot.

 

Ingredients for Govardhan Puja:-

Cow dung, Wheat, Roli, Rice, Batase, Water, Kheer, Milk, Saffron, Paan, Jaggery, Milk, Green fodder, Flowers, Curd, Honey, Ganges water, Incense, Basil leaf, Deep, Sugar, Naivedya, Yellow Garland of flowers, fruits, flute, and Dakshina, etc.

 

Govardhan Puja Vidhi:-

  1. For this, make a square and mountain before the cow dung and decorate it well with flowers. Now place incense, lamp, water, fruits, and above-mentioned ingredients, etc. on Govardhan and read the story.
  2. Perform Govardhan Puja Aarti.
  3. When the worship is done after, circumambulate Govardhan seven times, during this time there should be water in your hands, you should take it in a pot, keep in mind that the water should keep falling little by little during the circumambulation.
  4. Offer Annakoot Prasad in the Puja and after worship, after listening to the story of Goverdhan puja give this Prasad to all the members of the house to receive it.
  5. Do not see the moon in the evening, if you worship Govardhan with full rituals in this way, then you get the blessings of Lord Shri Krishna as well as wealth, progeny, and cow gratification.

 

Govardhan Puja Mantra:-

गोवर्धन धराधार गोकुल त्राणकारक। विष्णुबाहु कृतोच्छ्राय गवां कोटिप्रभो भव।

हे कृष्ण करुणासिंधो दीनबंधो जगतपते। गोपेश गोपिकाकांत राधाकान्त नमोस्तुते।”

Govardhan Puja Muhurat:-

In the year 2021, Govardhan Puja Muhurat will start on 05th November, and there are 2 Muhurats on this day one is in the morning and 2nd is in the evening.

Morning Govardhan Puja Muhurta will be: 06:35 am to 08:47 am

Evening Govardhan Puja Muhurta will be: 03:21 pm to 05:33 pm

 

How to Make Annakoot?:-

Various types of vegetables, confectionery made from milk and mawa, and rice are used to make Annakoot. Seasonal food-fruits-vegetables and fruits are offered in Annakoot. In Govardhan Puja, along with Lord Krishna, all the Gods who help in producing food on earth like Indra, Agni, Tree, and Water God are also worshipped. In Govardhan Puja, Indra is worshiped because after the pride was shattered, Shri Krishna asked for forgiveness and Shri Krishna also recognized the worship of Indra in Govardhan Puja as a blessing.

 

Story of Govardhan Puja:-

When Lord Shri Krishna saw the people of Brij worshiping Indra, the curiosity to know about it arose in his mind. Shri Krishna’s mother was also worshiping Indra. Krishna asked the reason for this, then it was told that Indra do rains, then there is the crop in the fields and our cows get fodder. On this, Shri Krishna said that our cows live only on the Govardhan Mountain, so the Govardhan mountain should be worshipped.

After this Shri Krishna asked Brijwasi to start Govardhan Puja every year which is also known as the Annakoot festival.

 

Rituals to perform on Govardhan Puja:-

There is an ancient tradition of getting up early in the morning on the day of Govardhan Puja and taking a bath after massaging the body with oil. Therefore, on this day, wake up early in the morning and sit at the place of worship with the worship material and meditate on your family deity. Prepare Govardhan Mountain with full devotion for worship with cow dung. It should be made in the shape of a male lying down. If you don’t make it right, make it the way you want. Symbolically prepare it in the form of Govardhan, with flowers, leaves, twigs, and cow figures or you can decorate it with any shape according to your convenience.

When the figure of Govardhan is ready, place Lord Krishna’s idol in the middle. Also, make a pit as large as a bowl in place of the navel and place a bowl or an earthen lamp there. After this, put milk, curd, Gangajal, honey, and Batase, etc. in that vessel and worship it. After this recite the Govardhan Puja Mantra
