Dussehra 2021 | Famous Hindu Festival

Dussehra or Vijayadashami is celebrated as a big festival across India which is celebrated on the tenth of Ashwin month. This festival is celebrated with great pomp in the form of the victory of Shri Ram over Ravana and the killing of the demon Mahishasura by Durga Devi. In fact, according to Hindu beliefs, this time is dedicated to religion, only its customs remain different in all the provinces. Like in Delhi it is known as Dussehra and in Bengal, it is popular as Durga Puja, while in Mysore it is called Dussehra. And in Gujarat, it is observed as the Navratri festival.

Why do we celebrate Dussehra:-

Dussehra / Vijayadashami is an important festival in the country of India, and it is celebrated on the tenth of Ashwin month with great fanfare according to the Hindu calendar. This festival is considered a victory of good over evil, as on this day Lord Rama defeated Ravana in the battle and killed him. There is another belief that on this day, during the Navratri, Mata Durga killed a demon named Mahishasura, this is the reason this festival is also called Vijayadashami.

Importance of Dussehra festival:-

The festival of Dussehra is celebrated on the Mahanavami of Ashwin month. This festival is celebrated as the defeat of evil and victory of good. According to the scriptures, on the day of Dussehra, Lord Rama killed the arrogant Ravana and liberated the earth from its sins. The ten-headed Ravana was killed and Maa Durga also an end to evil by killing the Mahishasura demon. For this reason, this festival is known as Dussehra. Nine days before Dussehra i.e. on Navratri, Ramlila is organized at various places.

On the day of Dussehra, people are given the message of victory of good over evil by burning the effigies of Meghnad and Kumbhakarma along with Ravana. Not only this, fairs are also organized at many places on Dussehra. The festival of Dussehra is celebrated with great pomp in India. But in North India, Dussehra is given more importance.

On the occasion of this festival, we have seen an official holiday in a few of the states in India. According to the Hindu Panchang, the Dussehra date is falling on 15th October 2021.

In states like Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, where there is an emphasis on idol installation and pandal construction during Durga Puja, in northern states like UP, Delhi, and adjoining states, Ramlila is organized during nine days of Navratri and Dussehra on Dashami. It is believed that the Dussehra of Bastar or Jagdalpur was started in the 13th century by the Kakatiya king who ruled here at that time. Rath Yatra is also taken out on the occasion of Dussehra.

Mysore Dussehra:-

Mysore’s Dussehra is also world-famous. Tourists from all over the world come here to see the tableau coming out on the occasion of Dussehra. The Dussehra celebration of Mysore lasts for 9 days and on the last day (i.e. tenth day), it is celebrated as Vijayadashami. During this, a grand procession is taken out and not only the Mysore Palace but the entire city is decorated like a bride. Dussehra festival is also celebrated with loud noise in the main Chamundeshwari temple of the city.

Kullu Dussehra:-

The Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh is not only known for its natural beauty, but the religious festivals organized here are quite special. The Kullu Dussehra celebrated here attracts the attention of the whole world. The festival lasts for a week which starts on the day of Vijayadashami. There is a huge number of tourists from India and other countries come to take part in this special festival. This festival has now emerged as an international festival.

The Dussehra festival of Kullu is believed to have started in the 17th century when Kullu was considered a stronghold of kings. The Dussehra festival also takes place on a different level here, where a large number of devotees take out a tableau carrying the idol of their respective deity in a Doli and visit Lord Jagannath, the main deity of Kullu, located in the temple grounds. . Here the festival of Dussehra lasts for 7 days, in which along with dancing and singing, cultural programs are also organized.

Vijayawada Dussehra:-

The 10 days of Dussehra begins with the Sri Kanaka Durga temple built on the banks of the Krishna River. Here Kanaka Durga Devi is decorated in different avatars for ten days. At the same time, the special aura of Vijayawada Kanaka Durga Temple is also created on seeing it. Many types of worship are performed here during Dussehra, in which Saraswati Puja has a special recognition. Apart from this, devotees also take a bath in the Krishna River.


How Dussehra festival is celebrated:-

This festival is celebrated with great joy and gaiety. For ten days, the story of Ramayana is played as a drama, which is called Ramleela. In this drama, the scenes of the life of Shriram are presented. In all the big cities and towns, this Ramleela is organized on large and open fields. Ramlila shows the scenes of Ramayana with great reverence and fervor. These include scenes of Ram’s birth, marriage, and going to the forest. On Dussehra, a fierce battle is shown between Rama and Ravana, and in the end, Shriram kills Ravana. Large effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakaran, and Meghnath are placed on the field.

There are different types of fireworks done on this day. As soon as Ravana dies in Ramlila, these effigies are set on fire. As the flame of fire rises, the fireworks of the effigies start bursting. The audience reverberates through the slogans of ‘Shri Ram Chandra Ki Jai’. After burning the effigies, colorful fireworks are left in many places. After this, Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, and Hanuman are seated in a chariot and the procession is taken out of the main roads of the city and ends by reaching the Rama temple.
