Durga Puja Background History:-
It is believed that Mata Durga fought for 10 days with a demon Mahishasura, and killed him on the 10th day. Durga Puja is celebrated for the victory of truth over evil. When Durga Puja is organized then Navratri is celebrated in northern India and Vijayadashami i.e. Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day. Ramlila is performed in North India at this time. The most prevalent story of this festival is as follows.
Long ago, the gods and demons used to fight to get heaven. The gods each time defeated the Asuras in some way or the other. One day a demon named Mahishasura pleased Lord Brahma by doing penance. Then he asked Brahma Ji to grant him the boon of immortality. But Brahma Ji did not give him this boon and said that he cannot give the boon of immortality, but I give this boon that no man can kill you only a woman can kill.
Now Mahishasura was very happy with this boon, he thought that I am so powerful, what will a woman be able to beat me. After this, all the Asuras attacked the gods, they could not kill Mahishasura, so took their agony and went to the trinity. Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh three together gave birth to Durga, the goddess of power with their powers, and asked them to slay Mahishasura.
There was a war between Maa Durga and Mahishasura and on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month, Mother Durga killed this sinful Mahishasura. From the same day, this day is celebrated as a festival of victory of truth and end of evilness.
