Dhanteras 2021 | Famous Hindu Festival

Dhanteras is a famous Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, on this day, along with Goddess Lakshmi, Kuber is also worshipped. This is the day when Lord Dhanvantari was born, hence this day is celebrated as Dhanteras. According to Skanda Purana, Lord Dhanvantari appeared from the churning of the ocean. When he appeared, he had a pot of nectar and brass ornaments in his hand. Therefore, with the worship of God on Dhanteras, utensils or any yellow metal are definitely bought.

Mythological belief is that by doing this Lord Dhanvantari blesses with health and wealth. It is believed that on this day whatever you buy increases 13 times. On this day, there is a law to buy coriander seeds which are taken as prasad and the remaining seeds are sown in their gardens or fields after Diwali. People buy new things on this day. It is believed that by bringing new items (gold, silver and utensils) in the house, Goddess Lakshmi’s grace remains throughout the year. Also, there is a special practice of buying gold on Dhanteras.

During Dhanteras puja, devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, and there is also a law to worship Yama Dev. Worshipping Lord Yama on this day protects from premature death.

Importance of Dhanteras:-

The decoration of houses is mainly done on this day, people decorate the main door of their house with lamps and electric lights, the doors of the house are opened for the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi on Dhanteras. In the main courtyard of the house, drawings of Rangoli are made with rice and flour as a symbol of the arrival of Lakshmi Ji in the house.

it is believed that in the worship of Dhanteras, Dhanvantari and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped and donated. This festival has great significance for the business class. People approach the market from their homes to buy various items. Items purchased in the auspicious time of this day give thirteen times profit to the holder. That’s why people consider this day as the main day of shopping.

Why do We Celebrate Dhanteras (Dhanteras background)?

According to the belief of the Hindu religion, it is said that on this day Bhagwant Dhanvantari, the lord of health, appeared from the churning of the ocean. He had a golden urn in his hand, in which he had given the nectar-filled to the gods, due to which he became immortal.

This is the reason that even today, on the day of Dhanteras, people worship Dhanvantari to wish for their good health and long life. From this day the Gotriratra fast begins, which continues for the next three days and ends on the day of Govardhan Puja. (Dhanteras background)


Dhanteras Puja:-

The day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi is dedicated to Dhanvantari ji, on this night his worship and rituals are performed. On the night of Dhan Trayodashi, people chant the name and mantra of Lord Dhanvantari, light a lamp of ghee in their house, shop, office, etc.

Deepdan is also done on Dhantrayodashi in public places like temples, cowsheds, riverbanks, wells, ponds, and gardens, etc. in villages, cities, and towns. It is also the biggest shopping day of the year. People also buy jewellery utensils, vehicles, etc. on this day.

Dhanteras Shopping – It is believed that any item purchased on this day gives thirteen times the profit. There is a tradition of buying silver or copper utensils, especially on this day. Who is Lord Dhanvantari?:-

Lord Dhanvantari was born on Kartik Krishna Paksha during the churning of the ocean between Gods and Demons. Lord Dhanvantari appeared with four arms and in his hands was a Kalash filled with nectar. Due to this nectar urn, the gods attained immortality. Lord Vishnu was born as Dhanvantari to bring health to the world. Lord Dhanvantari is considered as a physician of the deities and their worship is wished for health.

Dhanteras Puja Vidhi:-

On the day of Dhanteras, first of all, clean the house, then worship should be started at an auspicious time. On this day, Lord Kuber (God of wealth), is also worshipped. On this day 13 diyas are lit and Lord Dhanvantari, Lord Kuber, and Mother Lakshmi are worshipped with incense, lamp, Naivedya, etc.

People buy new things on this day. It is believed that by bringing new items (gold, silver, and utensils) into the house, Goddess Lakshmi’s grace remains throughout the year. Also, there is a special practice of buying gold on Dhanteras. It is said that Lord Dhanvantari had incarnated with an urn in his hand, so if you shop for utensils on this day, then Lord Dhanvantari is pleased and blessings keep showering in your house throughout the year.

Mahamantra of Lord Dhanvantari:-

While doing puja of Dhanvantari Dev devotees should chant the below mantra.

ॐ धन्वंतराये नमः॥


“ॐ नमो भगवते महासुदर्शनाय वासुदेवाय धनवंतराये:
अमृतकलश हस्ताय सर्वभय विनाशाय सर्व रोगनिवारणाय।
त्रिलोकपथाय त्रिलोकनाथाय श्री महाविष्णुस्वरूप
श्री धन्वंतरि स्वरूप श्री श्री श्री अष्टचक्र नारायणाय नमः॥


Importance of Yama Dev Puja on Dhanteras:-

In the scriptures, there is also a lecture about the worship of Yamraj i.e. Yama Dev on the day of Dhanteras and a story related to this is very popular, in which there was a king who was not getting a child. He got a child after a lot of worship and Yagya Havan. At the same time, when the king got a son, the astrologers told him that if his son gets married, then he will die after 4 days of marriage. The king was very worried after listening to the astrologers and he sent his son to reside in a place where no woman would come and go.

But destiny had something else approved. Suddenly a princess was passing from the place where the king’s son was residing. Seeing the princess, the prince was fascinated and both of them got married. But after 4 days of marriage, the prediction of astrology came true and the prince died. To save her husband’s life, the princess lamented a lot and requested the Messenger of Death to spare her husband’s life. Then Yamraj, seeing the condition of that princess, told her that on the day of Dhanteras, whoever worships me after three Pahar of the night and keeps a lamp in the south direction of the house, then the fear of premature death will be removed from them. Since then, after three Pahar of the night on the day of Dhanteras, the practice of placing the four-faced lamps on the south side of the house is going on.

Method of lighting Yama’s lamp:-

After midnight of Dhanteras, Yamraj is worshipped and in this worship, four-faced lamps are used. If you do not have a four-faced earthen lamp, then make a four-faced lamp of flour and place it on the right side of your main door. Keep in mind that the wick of the lamp should be facing south. At the same time, worshipping with lamp, roli, sandalwood, flowers, water, rice, and Naivedya, etc. and ask a vow to Lord Yamraj that keep safe us from prematurely death.
