Bhai Dooj is a festival of faith and belief of sisters towards their brothers. This festival, symbolizing the affection of brother and sister, is celebrated two days after Diwali. On this day sisters apply tika on their brother’s forehead and wish him long life.  This day is also called Yama Dwitiya. Yama Dev is also worshiped at the festival of Bhai Dooj. The tradition of celebrating this festival started only as a boon given to the Yamuna by Yamraj.

Significance of Bhai Dooj:-

This festival of Bhai Dooj, dedicated to this special relationship of brother and sister, which is very important. The main objective of this festival is to keep the flow of love and goodwill between brother and sister in this way. The story of Yamuna and Yamraj gives us the message that relationships are greater than all actions.

No matter how busy we are in our life, but we should try that on special occasions we must take out time for our loved ones and the festival of Bhai Dooj also gives us this message. Bhai Dooj Puja Vidhi:-

Bhai Dooj is a great festival that shows the love of sisters and brothers. On the occasion of brother, sisters pray for their brother’s prosperity and happiness by doing tilak with reverence. On this day, after taking bath in the morning, wearing clean clothes, worship Lord Vishnu and Ganapati. And after worshipping, sisters need to decorate the aarti plate and keep sweets to do the tilak of the brother. After keeping vermilion, kumkum, fruits, sandalwood, flowers, betel nut, etc. on the plate, ask your brother to sit on the post. Now you need to do his tilak in the auspicious time and do the aarti. After tilak and aarti, the sister should give betel nut, Gola (Dry coconut), clothes and black gram, etc., to her brother. After the aarti, it is the time of the brother who should be ready with a lovely gift for their loveable sister and makes the sister promise to protect her in the time of calamity.

History of Bhai Dooj:-

There are many mythological stories behind this festival and here we have mentioned 2 of them for your reference.

  1. Surya’s sons Yama and Yami were siblings. One day Yamraj reached Yamuna’s house after calling by the Yamuna several times. Yamuna Ji was very pleased to see Yamraj standing at the door of his house and he respected Yamraj with love and also feed him with love. On this occasion, Yamuna wished him a happy life by doing tilak. After this, when Yamraj asked sister Yamuna to ask for a boon, After this, when Yamraj asked sister Yamuna to ask for a boon, Then the Yamuna take a promise to her brother that every year you come to my house on this day and any sister who does tilak will not be afraid of you. Yamraj was very pleased to hear the words of sister Yamuna and blessed her. Bhai Dooj festival started from this day.
  1. There is also a legend associated with this festival that on the day of Bhai Dooj, Lord Krishna returned to Dwarka after killing the demon Narakasura, and his sister Subhadra did a welcome tilak on Lord Krishna’s head and prayed for his long life.
